What Makes You Come Alive?

What Makes You Come Alive?

My favorite movies are the stories of epic adventures. You know the kind…where against all odds the unlikely hero rises up and destroys the enemy.  Braveheart, Lord of the Rings, Gladiator, Chronicles of Narnia…that genre of films speaks to my heart more than any other.

When we were buried by six figures of debt my greatest pain wasn’t that I couldn’t afford things or take a nice vacation. It was that I felt God’s purpose on my life had to be put on hold until I was out of debt and able to fully focus on the adventure he has for us. Like a football player on injured reserve, I had to watch from the sidelines, waiting for my injuries to heal before I could get back in the game.

If you have felt this way, you need to know that God’s purpose on your life is never put on hold. You may make decisions that affect how that purpose is played out through your life, but his purpose for you still stands. Your “injuries” may limit you, but he still has a place for you in the game.

What Makes You Come Alive?

This morning, I read an obscure verse in Colossians (4:17) that I’d never even noticed before, even though I’ve read this at least a dozen times. Paul writes, “Tell Archippus: ‘See to it that you complete the work you have received in the Lord.'”

Did you see it?

Some people speak about God’s will as if it’s just a generic attitude. Using verses like “be thankful, for this is God’s will for you.”

Yet Paul affirmed that God had given Archippus a specific “work” to do, which could be completed. This wasn’t a never-ending task like “be thankful” but was a direct and specific assignment.

What makes you come alive? That’s a great question. I can list off a few activities that make me feel alive…leading teams, mission trips, deep conversations, being in the mountains, etc. But there’s something in me that believes that Archippus found it. He had what I want.

It’s the foremost question on my heart…”God, what is the ‘work’ that you want me to do?”

Find the answer to that question and you’ll find what makes you come alive.
